Comment Guidelines for Mindful Latter-day Saint Christian Apologetics and Living

To ensure discussions are respectful, thoughtful, and aligned with principles of faith and kindness, these guidelines provide a framework for engaging in meaningful conversations while fostering mutual understanding.

1. Be Mindful of Your Words

  • Avoid Hostile or Aggressive Language: Refrain from using words or tones that can be interpreted as demeaning, hostile, or inflammatory.
  • Practice Kindness and Respect: Speak with charity and empathy, even when discussing differing viewpoints.
  • Assume Good Intent: Begin every discussion with the presumption that others are participating in good faith.

2. Maintain Thoughtfulness in Engagement

  • Articulate with Clarity: Express your thoughts with precision and coherence, avoiding ambiguity or overly complex arguments.
  • Be Open to Learning: Approach discussions with humility, acknowledging that no one has all the answers.
  • Seek to Uplift: Offer perspectives that inspire faith, hope, and understanding, rather than sowing division or doubt.

3. Follow Proper Netiquette

  • Stay On-Topic: Address the subject at hand without derailing the discussion.
  • Avoid Caps and Excessive Punctuation: Writing in all caps or using excessive exclamation marks can appear aggressive.
  • Cite Sources Appropriately: When sharing facts or doctrinal insights, provide reliable sources to back up your statements.

4. Use Objective Language

  • Stick to the Facts: Share objective truths and avoid speculative or unverified claims.
  • Avoid Personal Attacks: Discuss ideas, not individuals, focusing on principles rather than personalities.
  • Frame Criticism Constructively: When addressing errors or misconceptions, aim to educate rather than criticize.

5. Respect the Flow of Discussion

  • Listen Before Responding: Read and consider others’ comments thoroughly before replying.
  • Acknowledge Points of Agreement: Highlight areas of consensus to build common ground before addressing differences.
  • Avoid Overloading the Discussion: Be concise and focused, contributing thoughtfully without monopolizing the conversation.

6. Cultivate a Christlike Tone

  • Reflect Christ’s Example: Strive to be a peacemaker (Matthew 5:9), speaking in ways that emulate Christ’s love and patience.
  • Pray for Guidance: Before engaging in discussions, seek the Holy Spirit’s influence to ensure your words are inspired by wisdom and compassion.
  • Invite Dialogue: Create space for others to share their perspectives by asking open-ended, respectful questions.

By adhering to these principles, participants can foster an environment of respect and spiritual growth, making discussions a positive experience for all involved.
